A volume discount gives a shopper a reason to buy a useful extra quantity, but the tier only works if the savings are easy to understand and the larger order still earns enough margin. Start with the numbers, then decide how to show the offer on your Shopify product page.

Choose tiers from buying behaviour, not round numbers

Look at the quantities customers already buy for a product. If most orders contain one item, a two-item tier is a smaller step than a ten-item tier. Consumables and gifts may suit larger breaks; a high-priced item may not. Keep the first threshold close to a realistic purchase and add another only when there is a good reason to buy more.

Here is a simple example for a product priced at £20, with a £10 unit cost before fulfilment and other variable costs:

QuantityOfferCustomer paysGross profit before other costs
1Regular price£20£10
210% off£36 total£16 total
315% off£51 total£21 total

This example is a calculation, not a recommended discount. Subtract packing, payment, delivery, and return costs for your own products. Compare profit per order as well as profit per unit. If the extra item creates little profit, move the threshold, reduce the discount, or choose another product.

Make the price break visible before the quantity decision

A tier hidden in the cart arrives after the shopper has chosen a quantity. Put the break near the product price or quantity control, and show the resulting total. "Buy 3, save 15%" is useful; "Buy 3 for £51 instead of £60" makes the decision even easier. Check the display on mobile and test what happens when a shopper changes variant or quantity.

Perk's volume offer shows selectable tiers on the product page. Merchants can use percentage or fixed amount tiers and choose from three layouts. A selected tier updates the quantity, while checkout applies the eligible discount. For fixed amount tiers, the amount is taken off the qualifying product group, so label the saving as a total rather than "off each".

Pick the Shopify setup that matches your store

  • One threshold: Shopify's amount-off discount can require a minimum quantity. Use it if one break is enough and you do not need a tier selector.
  • B2B catalog pricing: Shopify supports volume pricing in B2B catalogs. This is for stores using that B2B setup, with its own quantity and variant rules.
  • Several storefront tiers: Use a volume discount app when shoppers should compare and select breaks directly on the product page. Perk is one option for this workflow.

Run a checkout test before publishing

Test one unit, each exact threshold, and one quantity between thresholds. Try a cart with another product too. Confirm the product total, shipping, and any other discounts at checkout match what the page promises. Then compare orders and profit after launch, not just how often shoppers select the largest tier.

Perk puts selectable volume tiers on Shopify product pages and applies the eligible saving at checkout.

Frequently asked questions

Can I offer volume discounts on Shopify?

Yes. Shopify's built-in amount-off discounts can have a minimum item quantity. For several price breaks on the same product, you can use B2B catalog volume pricing where it fits your store, or an app such as Perk for a product-page tier selector.

Should a fixed volume discount be per item or per order?

Decide before publishing and state it clearly. In Perk, a fixed amount tier takes that amount off the eligible product group, not off every unit. A percentage tier reduces the eligible product group's price by that percentage.
